KSU Intensive English Learning Program

Section 3/ July 20 –August 17, 2012

Welcome Intensive Session Students!

Kentucky State University (KSU) is proud to offer a 4-week Intensive English Learning and Cultural Immersion Program for foreign students. There will be three classroom courses and one class for six official field trips (non-credit 6-9 hrs.) – IESL101 (grammar), IESL102 (writing), and IESL 103 (conversation and reading) – and IESL104 field trips to allow students to experience American culture and learn modern language. Through the scheduled activities, we are confident that each student’s experience will be rewarding and unforgettable! The focus will be on experiencing the culture of the United States, visiting sites, and conversation with Americans.

Summary of Content for Classroom Courses

Each class will incorporate the four essential research-based activities for learning English: speaking (fluency and pronunciation), listening (oral comprehension), reading (vocabulary and comprehension); and writing. There will be daily homework assignments, and in-class activities will include individual and group work. Students will be required to practice on their own at the computer lab, and will be scheduled for individualized tutoring and English practice with master’s level instructors from the Academic Center for Excellence.

Content for IESL101 English grammar and syntax will include: verbs; tense agreement; nouns and pronouns; idioms; prepositions; comparatives & superlatives; punctuation and capitalization; adjectives & adverbs; common grammatical mistakes of IESL learners.

Content for IESL102 English writing will include: proper sentence and paragraph structure; the writing process, writing instructions and directions; comparing and contrasting; writing opinions; summarizing reading materials; and writing essays.

Content for IESL103 English conversation and reading will include: learning effective listening and speaking skills, improving vocabulary and reading comprehension, and preparing students for field trips to enhance learning about the customs and culture of America.

Schedule for Classes: Classes will begin on Monday, July23

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,

8:30 – 10:00 a.m. IESL 101-01,02 Fundamentals of Writing. Meets in HH

10:30- 12:00 a.m. IESL 102-01,02 Grammar/Syntax . Meets in HH

12:00-1:00 p.m. Lunch in KYSU Cafeteria.

1:00 – 2:30 p.m. IESL 103-01,02 Reading and Conversation Meets in HH.

3:00 – 4:00 p.m. All students are required to be in the computer laboratory or ACE (Academic Center for Excellence) if not in class. **Culture Shock Class held by Professor Kwang Suh (to be announced)

Instructors will provide students with detailed lesson plans for each class at the start of the session.

Wednesday~Friday, July 18~19

Students will be picked up at Lexington airport and transported to Days Inn, hotel rooms at City of Frankfort, Kentucky and KSU Campus.

Friday, July 20, Orientation

10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Official welcome and orientation – Dr. Kwang Suh

10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Placement testing (students will complete a nationally accredited placement test which will give the teachers a better idea of language level and understanding conversation skills).

3:00 p.m.-Students depart for hotel.

Monday, July 23, Academic Classes Begin

8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

1:00 p.m. Campus Tour of KSU Campus by Ambassadors Club.

Monday, 2:30-4:00 p.m. Frankfort (Capital City) Tour

This tour will take us to many historic and significant places in the capital city of Frankfort, such as the Capitol building, the governor’s mansion, the Capital city Museum, and the Kentucky River.

Weekend Cultural Immersion Classes/Conversational Trips: *may vary

Saturday, July 28 Visit to Kentucky Horse Park

9:00 a.m. Depart KSU

10:00 a.m. Trolley Tour

10:15 a.m. Hall of Champions Show

11:00 a.m. Parade of Breeds (Presentation highlights unique characteristics of selected breeds, and handlers put the horses through their paces. After the show, students will be able to pet their favorite horse, take close-up pictures, and talk with handlers.)

12:00 p.m. Depart Kentucky Horse Park

12:30 p.m. Arrive KSU

Sunday, July 29

9:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Visit Southeast Christian Church. This is the 5th largest church in the United States. After lunch, we will continue to Louisville where we will tour Churchill Downs, site of the world famous Kentucky Derby and tour the Kentucky Derby Museum ( Cost $8-10).

Saturday, August 4

8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Visit the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln – one of America’s most beloved Presidents. This national treasure is famous for its architectural and historical significance. Students will also visit Mammoth Cave (one of the largest caves in the world and take the Waterfall Guided Tour) and My Old Kentucky Home in Bardstown, which inspired the signature song of the Kentucky Derby. Cost $14.

Friday, August 10,11,12

Chicago Cultural and Conversation Tour, Experience the sights and sounds of one of the USA’s three largest cities. Visit famous Univ. of Chicago. Chicago Art Institute, Sears Tower-the tallest building in the USA and other famous American cultural sites.

Leave KSU at 8 a.m.-Arrive home Sunday night.

Final Thursday, August 16

-Final Cultural Shopping Trip at Fayette Mall (Distance 35 miles) in Lexington. Conversation with ESL teaching staff and cultural observation in the largest shopping mall in Kentucky. Depart KSU: 09:40 a.m. Return to KSU: 4:00 p.m.

Certification Awards Ceremony, and Farewell dinner at University Club. 5:30p.m. - 7:30p.m

Weekday Cultural/English Conversation Trips: In addition to the above listed classes and field trips, students will be guided on area cultural tours with a native English-speaking staff persons. Trips may include:

Tour of Buffalo Trace Distillery .

The distillery Tour begins with an engaging video of the history of Buffalo

Trace Distillery. You will walk along the path of rolling bourbon barrels and will be captivated by the alluring smell and atmosphere of the bourbon “sleeping” inside the aging warehouses. You will then see the bourbons being filled, sealed, labeled, and packaged-all by hand. Finally, the tour ends with a tasting of fine Kentucky Bourbon and more delicious treats! After the tour, you will enjoy a lunch at the Firehouse Café, located just a short walk away from the Visitor’s Center at Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Tour of State Journal Newspaper

You will visit Frankfort’s own newspaper, one of the few small daily newspapers still in existence in Kentucky. You will see the printing operations and visit with staff who will give you insights into occupations which use good writing and grammar skills.

Depart: 10:00 a.m. Return to KSU: 4:00 p.m.

W.S. Clark Center for Kentucky History and participate in Old State Capitol tour.

1:00 p.m. Depart KSU

1:30 p.m. Tour Kentucky culture and history from prehistoric times to the present. Visit Area B-First Kentuckians; Area C-The Kentucky Frontier; Area D-The Antebellum Age; Area E-War and Aftermath; Area F-Continuity and Change; Area G-The New Century; Area H-Depression and War; Area I-Many Sides of Kentucky.

3:00 p.m. Tour Old State Capitol of Kentucky with conversation and interaction with American guide who is an expert on Kentucky history.

4:30 p.m. Return to KSU

Aquaculture Research Facility, 1:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Cultural and English conversation tour of the KSU Aquaculture Research Facility. Students will learn about alternative ways farmers are learning to supplement their income. Dr. Bean will explain the ways they raise fish and shrimp. His main objective is to stir up interest in science-related careers for young adults. Students will have opportunities to ask questions as well as reporting back to their conversation class. There will be further opportunities to research and write about the “aquaculture ideas.”

Visit The Early Learning Village

During this visit, we will have the opportunity to observe teaching methods in a pre-school class and have opportunities to ask questions about the programs.

Visit Senior Adults who live at Kings Daughters Apartments

Students will interview some of the residents about their earlier lives and report back to the class.

Important Notice: All students are expected to bring sheets, pillows, and blankets for their beds. Students should also be sure to bring bathing suits and exercise shoes and clothes to enjoy the Exum Fitness Center on the KSU Campus, which is available for student use daily. This is very important.
